Madeleine suspect's lawyer attacks 'these bloody McCanns'

The McCann family today came under an astonishing attack from the lawyer for the only suspect in the hunt for their missing daughter.

Robert Murat's lawyer accused Madeleine's parents of "strange" behaviour, referring to the fact that they had left the three-year-old alone in their holiday apartment.

He then went on to claim that inhabitants of Praia da Luz in the Algarve, where Madeleine went missing, now just wanted "these bloody McCanns" to leave Portugal and return to Britain.

The decision of Mr Murat's lawyer to go on the offensive today follows increasing signs that the case against his client may soon be dropped.

The rebuke will heap pressure on Gerry and Kate McCann who have been subjected to vitriolic smears in the Portuguese media in the past few days.

Yesterday the Portuguese daily newspaper Diario de Noticias continued its campaign against the McCanns by suggesting that police had intercepted incriminating emails between the McCanns and their friends

These attacks followed the discovery of traces of blood in the apartment, although tests are not yet back on whether the blood is Madeleine's.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, Francisco Pagarete, a lawyer who has known Mr Murat since childhood, declared: "As a Portuguese person I think it is strange that somebody would leave their kids.

"Then, after the first thing happened, they left their twins and went to see the Pope. It was like the McCanns on tour.

"When I was a small child my parents had me on a leash so I would not run away. Kids are like that. Incidents can happen. Maybe the poor child could open the door and got away.

"You would never leave them alone like that in a foreign country and go and have a drink. It is not a normal thing."

Mr Pagarete added: "People in Praia da Luz say, 'These bloody McCanns should just go away and leave this town. They are giving it a bad name'."

The series of attacks on the couple is understood to have prompted them to abandon a high-profile campaign to publicise their daughter's disappearance in Portugal.

The statements have been described as "hurtful" by a spokeswoman for the couple.

The McCanns, both doctors from Leicestershire, were considering a tour of the country to mark, on Saturday, 100 days since Madeleine vanished.

The tour has been abandoned and Gerry McCann has made it clear that the couple want to "stay low-key" until the current storm blows over.

It is understood that yesterday evening they visited police headquarters in Portimao to discuss progress in the hunt for Madeleine.

Police sources say that the McCanns were told again they were not suspects in the case after a series of allegations in local newspapers.

Mr Pagarete's intervention will not have helped the McCanns who are facing a backlash in Portugal, where they have taken up residence since Madeleine went missing on 3 May.

Mr Murat, 33, has been named an official suspect by police, although little if any evidence appears to link him to Madeleine's disappearance.

Mr Pagarete, 32, who has invited Britishborn Mr Murat to his wedding next week, said his friend and client just wanted to clear his name and get on with his life.

Mr Murat, a father of one, has also been subjected to smears in the media.
Mr Pagarete added: "If the police never clear this matter up, Robert Murat will always be pointed at in the street as the number one suspect. It has been a nightmare for him and a long one. Let's hope it finishes soon."

The Belgian couple spotted with a girl thought to be Madeleine may have been driving a car with false number plates, it was reported last night.

Despite finding no DNA connection to Madeleine, police are still trying to trace the car, a modern black Volvo registered in Belgium, used by the couple and the young girl when they left the cafe.

Officers have been unable to find the couple after checks on black Volvos with the letters VUV on the registration as this car was reported to have.

Yesterday, Belgian prosecutors confirmed a DNA sample taken from a restaurant where a woman reported seeing Madeleine McCann was not linked to the missing four-year-old.

A police spokeswoman said the sample was from a man but said officers have not ruled out that Madeleine was present as he might have finished the bottle of drink.

A child therapist said she was "100 per cent sure" she saw the young girl at a restaurant in the Flemish town of Tongeren, not far from the Dutch border, on July 28.

The witness said the girl was with a couple, a Dutch man and an English-speaking woman, who were acting strangely and not like "normal parents".
Sightings of four-year-old Madeleine have been reported all over Europe and further afield since she was snatched from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3.

Although so far none has proved positive, the young girl's mother said they helped her by demonstrating that people were still looking for her daughter.

Kate McCann told BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour in an interview to be broadcast today: "We haven't had any news to the contrary that Madeleine isn't alive, and that's very important.

"And there have been many cases of children that have been found much later than this so again that's reassuring - so the hope's still there."

She and her husband Gerry faced the cameras again yesterday to affirm their belief that their daughter was still alive amid new speculation she was killed on the night she vanished.

Portuguese newspapers reported that detectives now suspected the young girl was not abducted, but died in her family's holiday flat in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz.

Blood specks found in the apartment are now being tested to see if they came from the missing four-year-old, reports claimed.

Sitting side by side, Kate and Gerry McCann spoke in subdued tones as they gave an interview to rebut suggestions that police now think Madeleine is dead.

The couple said they continued to "hope and pray" every day for the key breakthrough in the police investigation that would bring their daughter back to them.

Mr McCann, a cardiologist, said he and his wife "strongly believed" Madeleine was alive when she was taken from the apartment.

"We're not naive, but on numerous occasions the Portuguese police have assured us that they were looking for Madeleine alive."

Portuguese newspapers have suggested the police investigation is moving away from Robert Murat, at present the only official suspect or "arguido" in the case.

Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa, of the investigative Policia Judiciara (PJ), said it was the "official position" that the McCann family were not suspects.

Portuguese papers said yesterday that the McCanns would be re-interviewed by police shortly, but a family source said the couple had not been told about this.

The McCanns, who have remained in Portugal with their two-year-old twins, are gearing up for a bleak landmark this weekend - on Saturday it will be 100 days since Madeleine went missing on May 3.

So far there has been no major breakthrough in the case, and a second search of Mr Murat's home at the weekend apparently uncovered no new evidence.

Anglo-Portuguese Mr Murat, 33, has always strenuously maintained his innocence, and hopes the results of the search will prove he had no involvement in her disappearance.

The friends who were with Madeleine McCann's parents on the night she disappeared have tried to shake off a growing whispering campaign against them.

They have spoken out after a Portuguese newspaper claimed police had 'intercepted' emails and phone calls between Kate and Gerry McCann and their friends.

These, the newspaper reported, provided 'decisive proof' that Madeleine was not kidnapped, but died in the family's holiday apartment in Portugal.

Diario de Noticias, a respected national daily, said 'police sources' insisted the intercepted 'messages' were key evidence.

Other newspapers have already made a series of lurid and unsubstantiated claims about the McCanns.

Yesterday, stung by such claims, their friend Rachael Oldfield, a 36-year- old London recruitment consultant, suggested the police could be 'leaking' confidential information to the Press.

"I think there are some leaks coming from the police, but a lot of what I have read recently has been completely untrue," she said.

"Whether a journalist has had a bit of information and made the rest up, or the police are feeding some truth or untruths I just don't know."

Another of the party, Dr Fiona Payne, said: "You cannot attach any significance to what is being reported (in the Portuguese press)."

Mrs Oldfield, who is married to doctor Matthew Oldfield and has a one-year-old daughter, said: "It is very hurtful and it is all rather ludicrous. But it is difficult to defend because the investigationand everything in it is confidential. We don't want to jeopardise the investigation in any way or Madeleine's life. We are a bit stuck, really."

The Oldfields were at dinner with the McCanns and the rest of their party, Jane Tanner and Russell O'Brien from Exeter, Fiona and David Payne from Leicester and an unnamed woman, when Madeleine vanished from her bed in the holiday apartments in Praia da Luz on May 3.

The adults told police they had taken it in turns to check on their sleeping children, including Madeleine and her two yearold twin brother and sister, in nearby apartments.

Madeleine has been missing for three months

In statements to the Policia Judiciaria investigators, which were leaked to Sol magazine, Mr McCann said he first checked his three children at 9.05pm and thought it 'strange' that the bedroom door was ajar. He checked the window and shutters, which were both closed, and left.

Jane Tanner said she took her turn ten minutes later and saw a darkhaired man carrying a child in his arms as she came back.

Minutes after her return, according to police statements, Matthew Oldfield checked the children and noticed nothing unusual.

Mrs McCann went at 10pm and said she found the apartment window open, heavy metal shutters raised and her daughter missing.

Police say there are discrepancies between the timings given by the McCann party and staff and other diners in the restaurant that night.

One Portuguese newspaper yesterday, which quoted 'police sources', said: "If everything happened as the English holidaymakers say, in terms of their checking the children, it would be almost impossible for a kidnap to have taken place."

The McCanns, who on Tuesday denied stories in the Portuguese press that implied they had 'accidentally' killed their daughter, spent an hour with detectives yesterday afternoon.

They learned that a possible sighting of Madeleine in a Belgian cafe had been largely discounted after tests on a drinking straw used by the little girl spotted showed the DNA of an adult male.

A day in the life of the McCanns

Today Kate and I went to the Shrine at
Fatima to pray for Madeleine´s safe return. It was another early start
leaving at 6.30am. Mark Warner, who have looked after us so well,
laid on a car and driver. We managed to continue the campaign with
telephone conversations and e-mails. The actual visit was
veryencouraging with the rector and thousands of pilgrims praying for
Madeleine as well Kate and I. We lit candles for Madeleine and also 3
for Madeleine’s grandparents. The trip received a lot of publicity which
should help maintain the profile of her abduction. We are planning a
relatively quiet day tomoorow although the British Ambaasador is coming
to visit and we need to start finalising our plans for interviews in
areas of Europe where the coverage of Madeleine’s disappaerance has
been limited.

Day to day life for the McCann's

Usually there’s some free time then for a few stories or games with the twins before heading out.
9.00-9.15 We take Sean and Amelie to
Kids’ Club. They really enjoy it and run in. They know the staff well
and the staff are all excellent. Both love the domestic corner and
Amelie particularly likes to look after ‘babies’. We use the kids club a
bit like nursery at home but we think Sean and Amelie still think they
are on holiday!

9.30~12.15. We return to the apartments,
usually for a series of meetings with our press officer, Mark Warner
Reps, occasionally Consulate staff, lawyers and British Liaison
officers. During this time we catch up with family and close friends,
usually by telephone and discuss ideas how to keep Madeleine’s profile
high especially throughout continental Europe.

12.30 Time to pick up Sean and Amelie
from Kids’ club then head back to apartment for lunch, which has usually
been prepared by one of our family/friends group who have been
tremendously supportive.

13.30 –14.30 This is time to spend time playing with the twins either in the apartment or in the play area next to kids club.

14.30-15.00 Usually we take the twins
back to Kids’ Club although Sean has had the odd afternoon in the
apartment as it’s a bit cooler and he’s not much of a sun worshipper!
They have been taking part in many different activities including
painting, singing, stories, swimming, trips to the beach and they have
lots of toys to play with.

15.00~17.00 We try to get some time
together alone, going for a walk to talk things over or getting some
exercise. This is often the time for quiet trips to the church for
prayers.

17.00-17.30 Meet kids for high tea with
other mums and dads. They love pasta and have been doing really well
with their vegetables although a few chips have been squeezed in.

17.30-18.30. Games with kids at play area. Amelie loves trying to get in the baby pool!

18.30-19.30 Bath and story time with the twins.

20.00 We put the kids to bed.

20.30-23.00 We try to sit down for a
family meal, again usually cooked by one of the small family group out
here with us. Chat about the day’s events and plan the next day

23.30 bed and prayer for Madeleine that she will be returned to us safely ASAP.
In addition to above we try to attend
various church services during the week, and make multiple phone calls
to family and friends. We try to watch the main news early morning and
late evening but have had almost no time to read the newspapers or even
look at the pictures!

Kate is a keen runner and in the last few
days has tried to include a run in the daily routine. Yesterday (Sat)
at 7am we ran to the monument at the top of the steep cliff overlooking
Praia de Luz. We reached it in 19 minutes.

Madeleine was born in May 2003 a long-awaited and very much longed for small girl. She lives in the village of Rothley in Leicester, with her mummy and daddy and small brother and sister, Sean and Amelie.
Madeleine is a very pleased small girl with an outgoing personality. She has always been a very well loved small person, appealing to both children and adults alike with her amusing and engaging chatter. She has many friends who obviously miss her dearly. Despite her young age, it often felt like Madeleine had been on this earth before!
Like most girls her age, she likes dolls and dresses (and anything pink and sparkly) but with a certain taste for action-adventure too! She has an incredible amount of energy and even as a small baby, didnt seem to need much rest. She enjoys running and swimming and is an Everton fan like her mum and granddad.
Madeleine has always been a wonderfully loving and caring huge sister to Sean and Amelie. It was certainly not the quietest house on the planet with lots of giggling, singing and the inevitable odd bit of mischief! For Sean and Amelie, there is without doubt, a very vital person missing in their life.
Madeleine is a warm, life-enriching small person and will never fail were sure, to bring joy into the life of anyone she may encounter.

Our daughter Madeleine was abducted on 3rd May 2007 in Praia da Luz, Portugal, 9 days before her 4th birthday. She was taken from our holiday apartment where she was sleeping with her younger brother and sister whilst we were dining 50 yards away. Despite a massive investigation led by the Portuguese police and supported by the British police, we still do not know who has taken her, why she was taken or where she is. Since Madeleines abduction, we have learned a lot about missing children and child exploitation. The scale of the problem is massive and worldwide. Although finding Madeleine will always remain our priority, we feel it is our duty to highlight these problems as well as areas where legislation can be improved, in order to make the world a small safer for all children. To achieve these aims we are working closely with the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Centre for Child Exploitation and Online Protection and other non-governmental agencies throughout Europe (Investigation page). The Find Madeleine Campaign launched a new YouTube channel for missing children in August 2007 called Dont You Forget About Me in conjunction with ICMEC and Google.
The support we have had from around the world has been incredible. We have no doubt that without all the excellent wishes, prayers and efforts of so many people, our ordeal would have been so much harder. It has helped maintain our strength and hope, and this together with support for the campaign, has helped the search for our precious Madeleine. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their unconditional support and solidarity.
Madeleine is a gorgeous small person. She was a very pleased and much loved small girl. We believe there is a very excellent chance that Madeleine is still alive. She deserves the like and security of her family. She needs to be back home with her mummy and daddy, brother and sister.
